Compliance Dates and Timeframes for ONC Cures Act Final Rule Extended

On Thursday, October 29, 2020, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released an interim final rule with comment period (IFC) titled, “Information Blocking and the ONC Health IT Certification Program: Extension of Compliance Dates and Timeframes in Response to the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency.” This IFC extends the compliance dates and timeframes adopted in the ONC Cures Act Final Rule published on May 1, 2020, to assist health care providers and health IT developers of certified health IT to comply with requirements around information blocking, EHR certification, and the development of application programming interfaces (APIs) to facilitate the access, exchange, and use of electronic health information (EHI).

The compliance date for the general information blocking provision has been extended until April 5, 2021. The rollout of new standardized API functionality is extended until December 31, 2022.
